Bred in South Australia where citrus flourishes, this large, orange-fruited tomato is carried on sturdy, dwarf plants that will nevertheless need staking owing to the sheer weight of the fruits they carry. Loxton Lad tomatoes are meaty but have enough juice for eating raw in salads where their colour will be an added advantage. As you may have guessed, this variety comes from the Dwarf Tomato Project, but there's nothing “dwarf” about the fruits you'll harvest!

  • Growing Information

    How to Sow

Tomatoes are best sown in trays about 6-8 weeks prior to the last frost. Sow seeds about 5mm deep and keep the soil temperature to about 20 celcius until germination. Once the plants have grown their second leaves the seedlings can be transplanted into larger individual pots. Keep the tomato seedlings in a warm sunny position and maintain moisture levels. When planting out, position the plants so that soil covers the entire stem up to the first leaves. This will increase root development and ensure a healthy strong plant. Plants should be placed in full sun and rich soil.

    How to Harvest

Tomatoes ripened on the vine will be ready once they show their mature colour. The fruits can also be squeezed and should yield slightly when ripe. If frost occurs and temperatures drop late in the season all tomatoes can be picked. Tomatoes that do not ripen on the vine can be ripened indoors by being placed in a warm place out or direct sun.

    Top 3 tomatoes i've grown

Out of the 100+ varieties i've grown, this one is a winner. I have two bushes currently and the fruit are from 200g to 420g and it's production has been very good in that i probably have about 5-6kg on each bush. Had a few have caterpillars get into the exclusion bags and destroy around 10 but the ones i have eaten so far are absolutely delicious. I would describe the flavours as fruity (orange/tropical) and sweet with hardly any tartness. I used to grow pineapple tomatoes but they produce less then this and don't taste as good either.
