Another winning dwarf variety.. Mid-sized fruits with a beautiful blush of purple shot through with gold are borne in clusters. Thick-fleshed yet juicy, it's high in anthocyanins and known for its sweet, complex flavour. As a dwarf, it's perfect for those who don't have room for vining tomatoes and will even do well in pots. A must for urban farmers exploring the diversity found in unusual veggie varieties.

  • Growing Information

    How to Sow

Tomatoes are best sown in trays about 6-8 weeks prior to the last frost. Sow seeds about 5mm deep and keep the soil temperature to about 20 celcius until germination. Once the plants have grown their second leaves the seedlings can be transplanted into larger individual pots. Keep the tomato seedlings in a warm sunny position and maintain moisture levels. When planting out, position the plants so that soil covers the entire stem up to the first leaves. This will increase root development and ensure a healthy strong plant. Plants should be placed in full sun and rich soil.

    How to Harvest

Tomatoes ripened on the vine will be ready once they show their mature colour. The fruits can also be squeezed and should yield slightly when ripe. If frost occurs and temperatures drop late in the season all tomatoes can be picked. Tomatoes that do not ripen on the vine can be ripened indoors by being placed in a warm place out or direct sun.

    Good germination worth growing

This is my second time of growing dwarf Gondwana Lightening. It definitely lives up to it name. Out of all the dwarfs I have tried so far this is one of the fastest to germinate and grows vigorously. But I like unlike some it isn’t that dwarf and needs a good trellis or sturdy cane. To get more fruits I find it needs more seaweed fertiliser too than some of my other varieties, as it tends to grow a lots of leaves which are nice but not the reason we grow it. Beautiful mid size dark fruits that don’t thankfully tend to get many issues with my hungry king parrots, caterpillars or stinging flies here in the subtropics. Definitely worth growing and eating delicious when ripe. But again the fruit isn’t the fastest to ripen compared to say my travellers tomatoes. My fastest dwarf so far is Kangaroo Paw which has a bit smaller fruits to be fair but similar in taste although lightening is a bit richer in favour hence why I like it so much. Overall a great choice and will be on my list to grow again for sure.

    Seeds germinated well, all through.
Used heat pad and they were up in 7 days. Growing well still indoors due to cold weather but plants doing well with true leaves. Look forward to planting out and even more to tasting them.
