Grow one of the world’s most colourful and distinctive spices in your own garden. Turmeric develops lush, tropical foliage above clusters of vivid golden-orange rhizomes, which can be used fresh, dried or ground for cooking. It is an attractive and surprisingly easy warm-season plant when given rich soil, regular moisture and protection from frost. Turmeric can be grown in garden beds or generous containers and naturally becomes dormant during the cooler months, signalling that the mature rhizomes are ready to lift.

Growing Information
How to Sow
Plant rhizomes horizontally approximately 5 cm deep, with the buds or growing points facing upwards. Cover with rich, loose soil and water gently. Keep warm and lightly moist while waiting for shoots to emerge. Water regularly once growth begins and enrich the soil with compost or a balanced organic fertiliser. Allow the plant to grow throughout the warm season, then harvest after the foliage yellows and dies back.
How to Harvest
Allow the foliage to yellow and die down naturally before lifting the crop. Carefully loosen the soil and remove the rhizomes without cutting them. Set aside several healthy pieces with visible buds for replanting the following season.
