Ginger packets contain one or more rhizomes. Larger rhizomes can be divided into several pieces to produce multiple plants.

Bring the unmistakable fragrance and warmth of freshly harvested ginger into your garden. This lush tropical plant produces aromatic rhizomes beneath attractive, upright foliage, making it both productive and ornamental. Plant in spring once the soil has warmed and enjoy young ginger during the growing season or allow the crop to mature for a stronger flavour and larger harvest. Ginger thrives in rich soil with regular moisture and also grows beautifully in wide pots, making it possible to enjoy a homegrown crop even in cooler areas.

  • Growing Information

    How to Sow

Plant rhizomes horizontally with the buds or growing points facing upwards. Cover with 3–5 cm of rich, loose soil and water gently. Keep the soil warm and lightly moist until shoots emerge, which may take several weeks. Once growing strongly, water regularly and feed with compost or a balanced organic fertiliser. Harvest carefully when required or wait until the foliage dies back for a mature crop.

    How to Harvest

For tender young ginger, carefully uncover the edge of the plant and remove a small section of rhizome without disturbing the entire clump. For mature ginger, harvest after the leaves yellow and die back. Lift the rhizomes carefully, remove the stems and brush away excess soil.
