A conifer with very short needles, the Blue Spruce is a great tree for formal and informal upright bonsai styles as well as cascade and group planting. When pruning, pinch rather than trim the tips, and if you choose to wire it, exaggerate the bend as it does not set as well as most trees do.

  • Growing Information

    In The Garden

The lovely blue foliage on this species makes for a great specimen plant or dense hedge. A large tree, it is best planted in large gardens or parks unless it is clipped as topiary or hedge.

    Propagation

A tough tree with very deep roots, this tree is fairly drought tolerant and will grow in most soil types including clay soils. Well suited to either full sun or part shade the Blue Spruce will grow in all cool and temperate areas of Australia.

    Good germination rate.

These seem to be good seeds. In general, conifer seeds seem to be notoriously difficult to germinate with very low success rates - even when you do everything required, such as cold stratification and so on. But I got three seedlings from this small pack of 'blue spruce' so I think that's pretty good. Now I've just got to keep them sheltered and properly hydrated through the unseasonal heat of the 2024 spring we're having in eastern Australia. Anyway, it should be fun to watch these little trees grow up.
