Globe artichokes are a gourmet treat, and Imperial Star is sweeter than most. Unlike most other varieties, it will give you the coveted edible flower buds in its first year. The striking appearance of the plants makes them suitable for the ornamental garden, and the open flowers (if you allow any to get this far) are attractive too. As perennials, your artichoke plants are an investment that lasts for years, but do rejuvenate them by dividing the clumps every three years or so.
