Stately columbines are among the most striking flowers in any garden they grace, but their stature limits their versatility - unless you choose this dwarf variety. Thanks to their compact habit, dwarf columbines are suitable for pots and fit in well as a component of lower-growing mixed plantings. The colour palette is all you could wish for, and though you'll have to wait a while for the first blooms, self-seeding or repeat sowing can produce a good succession in later years.

    How to Sow

Columbines take a while to germinate, so be patient! Fool the seeds into thinking there’s been a chilly winter by refrigerating them for three or four weeks before sowing. Sow them quite shallowly and keep moist. A very light layer of mulch will help.
