This US mountain conifer is ideal for conical and windswept bonsai styles as the lead shoot tends to curve over naturally. The foliage is particularly attractive, with bronze new growth, and the branches are slightly pendulous.

  • Growing Information

    In The Garden

In Australian gardens, this tree will prefer a cool, moist, Southern slope since it tolerates cold well, but is less fond of heat. Although it can ultimately reach a height of 20m or more, it is very slow-growing and should thus be considered a small to medium tree.

    Propagation

It prefers an acidic, moist, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. It tolerates shade and lends itself well to pruning and clipping. In the US, this plant has been found to be susceptible to air pollution, but this should not be a problem in Australia.

Not planted yet but I can't wait to try the seeds and make a bonsai from scratch.
