  • Growing Information

    How to Sow

You can sow sunflowers in containers, but they germinate so easily that direct sowing will be just as good. They just need a light covering soil - about 3mm, and though they can do without a lot of water when they are bigger, you will need to keep the soil wet while you wait for them to germinate.

The seeds germinated very quickly in pots inside. Had to raise them there overnights because of the present unreliable weather conditions, but put them outside in a covered transparent little house during the daytime. They are now 150mm -ish tall and hope to transplant them this week as the weather in the Southern Highlands NSW seems to be settling down with no low (3-4 deg C) overnight temperatures forecast for a while at least..

Cannot comment for I won’t be planting them until I return from Perth in a few weeks.

They seem to be growing OK. About six inches high now.
