In the Garden
A medium sized tree to 25m, this species is native to many parts of North America. Aptly named the Red Maple, its flowers, petioles, twigs and seeds are all red to varying degrees. It has a fairly rounded crown shape with good leaf cover and it is widely grown as a feature tree or shade tree.
Propagation
Also referred to as the Swamp Maple, this species is one of the most widely distributed trees in North America being found from Quebec down to near Miami. As such it is tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions and can handle frost as well as heavy, wet and acidic soils. It can manage short periods of drought but prefers a moist soil.
