In the garden, it is also a fast grower, and makes an attractive shade tree with a pyramidal form – but it gets quite large, so ensure you’ll have enough space. Interestingly, this tree, which is prized for its timber and is often planted near shrines in Japan is the only species within the whole genus Cryptomeria.

Grow in full sun and give it a moist, well-drained, slightly acid to neutral soil for best results. This said, it grows well in most areas of Australia provided it has sufficient moisture.
